16 May 00NEW MAYOR AND SHERIFF FOR THE BOROUGH OF POOLE
Cllr Joyce Jones was elected Mayor of the Borough of Poole for 2000-01, at the Mayor Making ceremony on Tuesday 16th May 2000. Cllr Ron Parker was elected Sheriff and Cllr Bill Wretham, Poole Mayor for 1999-00, was appointed Deputy Mayor.
Cllr Joyce Jones is the 752nd Mayor of Poole and has chosen the Ladybird Appeal as her charity for her Mayoral year.
The Ladybird Appeal was launched in June 1999 to raise £1.3million to a build a dedicated unit for breast cancer patients at Poole Hospital. One in 11 women in Dorset will develop breast cancer at some time in their lives. The new centre will aim to make diagnosis and treatment more bearable for those women by bringing together all the hospitals services in one purpose built unit.
Rev. Jeff Waring, Rector of St. Michael’s Church, Hamworthy, was appointed Chaplain by the Mayor.
The Mayor’s youth escorts for the coming year will be Flt Sgt Chris Field and Cadet Emily Westcott from 149 Sqd Poole ATC.
Mayor of Poole, Cllr Joyce Jones said: "Having lived in Poole for over 60 years I have seen many changes, not least in my own community of Hamworthy. Today Hamworthy is a vibrant community with a strong sense of identity, which is reflected across the whole of the Borough. During my Mayoral year I hope to meet as many of the local people who help make Poole the place it is today."
Cllr Ron Parker, Sheriff of Poole, who will be supporting the Mayor in Civic duties and responsibilities, said: "It is interesting that today there are only 14 remaining Sheriffs in England and 2 in Wales. They are all located in historic cities and boroughs like Nottingham, London, Norwich and York and it is a great honour to the Borough of Poole that the Sherrif’s Convention is to be hosted here in late September. The prescribed requirement of the Poole Sheriffs in the past has been that they are fit, discreet and proper persons and with the help of my wife, Jean, I accept the honour of serving the historic Borough of Poole."
Cllr Bill Wretham in his outgoing speech said: "Peggie and I have been privileged over the last twelve months to attend many memorable occasions and spend time with so many wonderful people. The 175th anniversary of the RNLI coincided with my Mayoral year and I was invited to attend many celebratory functions. I would like to thank everyone for their help in making this such a memorable year for me."
