MAYOR MAKING - TUESDAY 16 MAY 2000


The new Mayor of Poole (Cllr Joyce Jones) and Sheriff (Cllr Ron Parker) will be officially invested at the Borough of Poole Annual Council meeting at 11am on Tuesday 16 May 2000 in the Council Chamber, Poole Civic Centre.

PHOTOCALL: Following the official ceremony there will be a photo opportunity of the Mayor, Sheriff and their Escorts in full regalia at 12.00 pm in the Mayor’s Parlour.

Mayor of Poole - Cllr Joyce Jones

Joyce Jones is to become the next Mayor of Poole. Joyce moved to Poole in 1940 and has lived in Hamworthy since her marriage to her husband Ken in 1953. They have three children and three grandchildren. Joyce enjoyed a long career as a teacher and taught in a number of schools throughout Poole before taking early retirement in 1987.

Representing Hamworthy Ward since 1991, Joyce has served on various Committees including Tourism, Planning and Transportation and Personnel and Support Services. Her particular interests are Housing and Education and she has served as Chairman of the Housing Committee and as a member of the Education Committee.

In her spare time, Joyce is a Trustee of the Municipal and Owen Carter Almshouses Charity Trust, a Friend of Upton Country Park and a member of the Hamworthy Townswomen’s Guild. Her hobbies include reading, gardening, dancing and rummaging around in antique shops.

Sheriff - Cllr Ron Parker

Ron Parker is to become the Sheriff of Poole for the coming year. Married with two daughters and four grandchildren, Ron was born in Dorchester and has lived in the Poole area since 1958. During his varied career as a teacher and lecturer in Business Studies, Ron’s experience has ranged from teaching at schools in Poole and Middlesex, to a post as Senior Lecturer at Dorset Institute of Higher Education until 1989.

Ron played a regular role in local government in Purbeck before joining Poole Council in 1988 as Ward Councillor for Bourne Valley. In 1995 he became Ward Councillor for Penn Hill. During this time he has served on a number of committees including Policy and Resources, Planning and Transportation and the Education Committee.

A member of the National Trust since 1981, Ron is able to indulge some of his favourite pastimes including swimming, photography and countryside walks at many of Poole’s outstanding beauty spots. As well as a keen interest in the theatre and classical music, Ron is an experienced foreign traveller. As Vice-Chairman of the Poole Cherbourg Twinning Society, Ron enjoys his passion for French Culture whenever possible and with family members living in France is always assured of a warm Gallic welcome.


Deputy Mayor - Cllr Bill Wretham
Bill Wretham, who is the current Mayor, will be Deputy Mayor in the coming year.
