25 Apr 00PERFORMANCE OF POOLE TO BE SHOWN IN DOME
Over 75 young people from schools across Poole will be delighting audiences with stilt walking, juggling and uni-cycling at the Dome on 4th May.
Using music, acting, dance and gymnastics local children will be using their talents to tell visitors to the Dome the story of Poole through the ages as part of the McDonalds Our Town Story events.
McDonald’s Our Town Story is a unique project that gives every community in the UK a chance to tell their story locally and in the Dome at Greenwich. Led by their education authority or library board, 210 communities from every part of the UK will tell their story of their past, present and future through music, drama, dance, poetry, song, the visual and multi media arts throughout the year 2000.
Poole’s performance will also include a strong ecological message about recycling. Props and costumes for the show have been made out of recyclable material.
Dome advisor’s were extremely impressed when a preview of the production was shown to local people on Sunday 9th April at Poole Arts Centre. Cllr Bill Wretham, the Mayor of Poole, said: "The performance given by the pupils of these schools was a great success. Apart from having fun they have also learnt a lot about their home town, developed their creativity and become part of a truly memorable experience".
Poole’s extravaganza will include three music groups; Poole Grammar School’s big brass band, St Mary’s School’s soulful jazz and sax and the pan pipe sound of home made ocarina instruments from Broadstone Middle School.
McDonald’s has made all the performances possible by providing £10,000 for each community. There are also another 210 towns producing similar shows. The twenty minute production will be repeated 3 times throughout the day in the specifically built 500 seat theatre within the Dome.
Maggie Semple, the Learning Experience Director of the Millennium Experience said: "McDonald’s Our Town Story is an exciting project that brings fun to learning and allows everyone but especially children to explore their past, think about their future and experience life outside of the classroom."
