Medical Company Funds Safety Signs In Poole

The Borough of Poole has recently installed additional warning signs at a busy junction in Poole which have been supplied and funded by KeyMed link will open in new window, Britain’s largest international medical equipment company.

In a joint exercise between the Council’s Transportation Services and KeyMed link will open in new window, the additional safety signs have been installed on The Avenue at its junction with the County Gates Gyratory.

Steve Tite, Acting Head of Transportation Services at the Borough of Poole said: “Although the signing and markings at this junction complied with government regulations some drivers were confusing the signals on the pelican crossing near the roundabout as a green light to proceed on to the roundabout, despite road markings and temporary signs reminding motorists to give way. In consultation with the Chairman of KeyMed, Paul Hillman, who raised the concern, we agreed that additional signing would help the situation and KeyMed agreed to provide the signs and fund their installation.”

Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation said: “We are pleased to link up with KeyMed in this positive initiative. Collisions at priority junctions contribute to a significant proportion of all accidents on the country’s roads and it is important that we do all we can in our own area to draw motorists’ attention to the need to take care when joining a main road.”

The signs, which are a large Give Way triangle on a yellow backing board, are illuminated and have been carefully sited so as not to affect drivers’ visibility to the Pelican crossing.

Paul Hillman of KeyMed link will open in new window, said: “Following the death of two of the company’s employees in different road accidents some years ago, we have observed first hand the devastating consequences in human terms that such events bring to those bereaved. As a result, we have been involved in promoting road safety for over 20 years, funding a number of schemes across the country, and are now principal members of the European Transport Safety Council.

“We have been pleased to work with the team at Poole Council in installing the signs to highlight to drivers that they need to concede priority to traffic on the roundabout.  Poole’s cooperative and positive response is genuinely valued, and the signs will undoubtedly improve safety at this location. In agreeing to publicise our involvement in this scheme, we hope to encourage other commercial organisations to help and take a more active part in supporting initiatives to improve safety on the roads.  What could be better than providing support which really can save lives”.
