14 Apr 00POOLE’S AWARD WINNING YOUNGSTERS
A record number of young people from Poole collected their Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Awards during an annual awards ceremony held on 13th April at the Civic Centre, Poole.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme operates on an International basis, mainly through schools and voluntary organisations. Poole is one of the smallest Operating Authorities, with an Open Award Centre at Creekmoor, which makes these awards all the more special.
Carol Mayne, Duke of Edinburgh' s Award Organiser for Poole, said: "This is an excellent achievement for Poole. Not only has the award scheme enabled our young people to learn new skills, it has also given them the chance to increase their self confidence and to make new friends".
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities, designed to support the personal development of young people aged 14-25.
Any young people who would like to join the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, should contact Carol at the Borough of Poole's Youth Service on 262288 for details. Activities can vary from Information Technology and pottery to mountain biking and rock climbing.
Adult volunteers are an important element to the award. Without their skills and enthusiasm, many young people would not be able to complete their award. If you can offer your time consistently why not become a Duke of Edinburgh's volunteer, which can be just as rewarding for you as it is for the participant.
