SUMMER SUN SPARKS MILLENNIUM FUN!

People in Poole are celebrating the millennium with street party style this summer.

With the prospect of sizzling temperatures, enthusiastic residents are taking the plunge and planning street parties throughout the summer period.

Canford Heath is leading the way with a Millennium Group set up by local residents who have organised a Millennium Festival and Carnival on 22 July 2000. To take advantage of the good weather, residents can apply for a road closure for a party between 27 May-29 September 2000.

Steve Tite, Highways Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "If you are thinking of holding a street party this summer, you need to apply for a road closure now. To help people organise and enjoy and enjoy their street party safely, we have produced some practical guidelines on how to apply. To help events run smoothly, people should remember to check with their neighbours and other residents, making sure they are aware and in favour before applying for a closure - the last thing you would want is an un-neighbourly dispute!"

An information pack which includes a road closure application form is available from Transportation Services, Borough of Poole. Anyone interested in holding a millennium street party can contact Julie Watts, tel: (01202) 262076.

Editor’s Notes:

· Closures are only available for cul-de-sacs or minor residential roads where there will be a minimal effect on the local road network.

· Signs and barriers are required to safely close the road. These can be hired from the Council’s maintenance contractor for £50, which includes delivery to a nominated address. Applicants must accept responsibility for this equipment and are liable for replacement if necessary. Cheques for this amount, made payable to the Borough of Poole, must be received by 1 May 2000. Closures will not be authorised until the payment has been made.

· Any waiting restrictions which exist in the road will continue to apply - these are normally in place for safety reasons such as providing access for emergency vehicles and therefore should remain effective.

· Public Liability insurance in respect of the closure will be provided free of charge by the Borough of Poole, subject to conditions contained within this guidance being met. However organisers are strongly recommended to take out their own liability insurance for the party itself.

· The closure will be effective for the date requested.

· Legal notification and public advertisement of the proposed closure is necessary. This will appear in the newspaper shortly and will be paid for by the Borough of Poole.

· Stewards will need to be nominated and on hand to ensure the event is well organised.

· The Police will be advised of the road closure, however it is recommended that you advise them directly and provide details of the event.
