POOLE BRIDGE RE-OPENS

Poole Bridge will re-open for road traffic and pedestrians at 6.00 am on Tuesday 11 April 2000, in time for tomorrow’s rush-hour.

Re-opening of the bridge was delayed for just over 24 hours to allow the gears which lift the bridge to be slightly adapted.

During the last four weeks, specialist contractors have been working around the clock to replace the gears and racks which support the bridge’s lifting leaves. This work has now been completed and final testing is underway.

Cllr Bob Williams, Chairman of the Planning and Transportation Committee, said: "I would like to thank everyone living and working in Hamworthy for their patience. The refurbishment of the bridge has been a huge task which was necessary to keep this vital link to the heart of the town in working order. The need for a new bridge to ease the pressure on the town has never been more evident and we will continue working to ensure this becomes a reality which will benefit everyone in Poole".

Normal bus services will also resume from 6.00 am tomorrow and the free ferry service will close at 23.00 tonight.
