10 Sep 03Poole's School Children To Protect The Environment
September 2003 sees the launch of the Borough of Poole’s new schools pack that will help and advise children how responsible behaviour can maintain and improve the local environment. Designed to appeal to students and support teachers the CD Rom, entitled ‘Environmental Programmes for Schools’, will be made available across 40 schools and throughout the Council Libraries and Youth Centres. It offers ready to use lesson plans and activities that complement both the national numeracy and literacy strategies. The CD Rom will run in line with the normal curriculum and will stimulate interest in all kinds of environmental issues including waste minimisation, recycling, littering, graffiti, chewing gum disposal, responsible dog ownership, fly tipping and marine conservation. It will also include case studies, maps and the opportunity to arrange site visits to places of interest around the Borough. With state of the art graphics and the Borough’s helpful Dolphin, ‘Captain Spruce’, to guide students through their journey of discovery, it will prove to be an invaluable and exciting learning experience. Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole, said: "The launch of the pack stems from the Council’s ‘Pride in Poole’ campaign. We want the whole community to have pride in our beautiful town and to understand how they can individually help to sustain and improve the environment. We hope that the pack will play a part in helping Poole’s young people to be involved in a significant part of that process". Councillor Jonathon Pethen, Environment Portfolio holder, said: "Children have a great interest in their environment and this pack will help them to better understand why we need to protect it."
