14 Aug 06The Mace-Bearers Come To Town
The Annual Conference of the Guild of Mace-Bearers
will be held in Poole tomorrow for the first time.
The Guild of Mace Bearers
is the national membership organisation for those who carry the mace, which represents authority under the Crown, when Mayors are out and about on official business. The Mace Bearers also assist with ceremonial duties and often act as the Civic Heads’ chauffeur.
Around 35 Mace Bearers from all around the country will be visiting Poole on the 14th – 16th and their itinerary includes their annual AGM with guest speakers, a tour of the RNLI college and an evening reception hosted by The Mayor of Poole, Councillor Mrs Judy Butt. The current Renter Prime Warden, David Knight will be elected to lead the organisation for the coming 12 months and will be installed by the Mayor of Poole.
The Mayor of Poole, Councillor Mrs Judy Butt said: “The Mace-Bearers perform an intrinsic and vital role in supporting and advising myself and all members of the Civic party with regard to protocol and custom which enables me to perform my duties, obligations and rights in serving as an ambassador for all the communities of Poole. The Guild’s annual conference carries on a long-standing, historical tradition and I am extremely proud to be welcoming all members of the Guild to Poole. It is especially poignant to me as the new Prime Warden Mr David Knight is my own personal chauffeur and a true professional within his capacity as Macebearer.”
