SOCIAL SERVICES IN POOLE GIVING TOP PERFORMANCE

Poole’s Social Services has been praised for making "substantial progress" by the Government’s Social Services Inspectorate.

In a recent review of Poole’s performance during 1999/2000, the Social Services Inspectorate found that good progress had been made in a number of areas and that Government priorities and targets in social care were likely to be met.

Areas where progress was especially noted included:
· developments under the Crime and Disorder Act which have established clear roles for Social Services in the prevention and reduction of youth offending particularly for children and vulnerable adults.

· achieving national objectives for mental health services including initiatives to reduce suicide rates across Dorset, development of a specialist team focusing on dementia in older people and working with the NHS to develop 24 hour access to services.

· the development of a carers’ strategy and prevention strategy helping to ensure older and vulnerable people can remain safely at home.

· confidence in the Authority’s grasp of the need for efficiency.

Cllr Mrs Jane James, Chairman of the Social Services Committee, said: "Poole’s Social Services are continually working to improve and this review shows how much we have managed to achieve. However we are not complacent and know there is more work to be done. The Social Services Inspectorate will be reviewing every Social Services Authority once a year against national priorities and targets and we will work to ensure Poole continues to make good progress which will benefit local people".
