Poole Receives Tough Budget Settlement: April 2004 - March 2005

Difficult choices face Councillors in Poole as the Government announces a tough budget settlement for the Borough.

Government have announced that the Formula Spending Share (FSS), which is the figure they calculate that the Borough of Poole needs to provide services for their residents as £124.559million. Of this the Government will give support of £74.182 million towards providing services in Poole next year.

Cllr Brian Leverett, Leader of the Council, said: "We are still working out the detail of this complicated settlement but what is obvious, is that Poole still receives far less funding than is needed to provide essential services for residents next year.

This is despite our consistent lobbying of Government on this issue over recent months and has left Poole with some tough decisions to make over the levels of Council Tax next year. The Government has unrealistic expectations of how much it takes to provide the services that local people deserve and to meet the extra burdens that they impose on us every year.

By ensuring that we keep tight control of our budgets this year, we have helped to keep the situation from becoming worse, which is essential when we receive such a poor financial support from the Government. This continued low funding of Poole must stop, it is just not good enough or fair for our residents.

It is too early to say what this settlement will mean for Poole Council Tax payers. We now have to weigh up the choices and will continue to bear in mind what we are hearing from our residents."
