POOLE GOES LIVE ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB

BOROUGH of Poole is bringing the latest technology to the community as it launches its first ever Internet web site.

The Council site, which was designed by Poole company Redweb and goes live on Monday 29 June 1998, contains over 1,000 pages of information on all aspects of the Council's work.

Net surfers will be able to find details on everything from highways to home care, beaches to building maintenance and Councillors to culture.

There are plenty of interactive features and members of the public will be able to catch up on the latest developments and news from the Council.

Part of the site is devoted to tourist information on Poole, including accommodation and events. The tourism site also features a chat line and bulletin board.

There are e-mail addresses for relevant sections of the Council so that members of the public can contact them direct and there's also a chance to give your views on the site through the 'Talk to Us' facility.

Council web site co-ordinator Louise Philps said: "The launch of our web site takes us to the next level of communicating with the people of Poole.

"Local people and potential visitors to Poole will have access to up-to-date information on all aspects of the Council and will be able to contact us quickly. We hope that everyone who visits the site finds it user-friendly - any comments from visitors to the site will help us to develop and improve it."

Demonstrations of the web site will be on offer at different locations during next week. On Tuesday (1-5 pm) you can see the site in action at Tesco, Tower Park when children from Haymoor Middle School in Canford Heath will be testing it out and using the chat line.

Haymoor's IT co-ordinator Melanie Dowler said: "The Internet allows children to communicate with each other in towns and cities across the world - they can talk to each other in real time. The Internet makes the world smaller and education richer."

The Haymoor pupils at Tesco will be talking to friends back at the school via the Council's chat line.

Tesco Customer Services Manager Paul Bennett said: "We are committed to working in partnership with the community and this is an excellent opportunity to do that. It is important to deliver information to the public in the most convenient locations and your local supermarket is an ideal venue."

There is also a chance to see the Council web site in action at the first Liverpool Victoria Summer Festival Evening on Poole Quay on Thursday (2 July 1998).

A computer will be set up at the Tourist Information Centre for demonstrations of the web site from 6.30-9 pm.

The first section of the web site - a special feature on the campaign for the Poole Harbour Bridge - was launched in January.
