6 Jul 98DESIGNATED DRINKING AREAS TO BE INTRODUCED ON POOLE QUAY
DESIGNATED areas for outdoor drinking are to be introduced on Poole Quay this month as part of a major management plan for the area.
The Continental-style initiative is being introduced by the Quay Area Quality Team, which includes representatives from the pubs and other businesses, local residents, the Council, Poole Harbour Commissioners and the police.
The scheme is part of the Poole Quay Quality Management Plan, which aims to manage all the diverse interests of the Quay and those who use it.
Specially designed bollards and rails, commissioned from an artist blacksmith, are due to be installed shortly to mark the areas where drinking will be allowed outside the Lord Nelson and Jolly Sailor pubs. Designated areas outside the Poole Arms and the Portsmouth Hoy pubs will be defined by existing street furniture.
Nora Coomber, residents’ representative on the Quay Area Quality Team, said: "We think that this scheme will encourage people of all ages, both locals and holiday-makers, to come to the Quay and enjoy all it has to offer.
"We are asking everyone who drinks at the Quay to help us make this scheme work and keep the Quay a beautiful and safe place for everyone."
Paul Gill, business development manager for the Whitbread Pub Partnership which owns the Poole Arms, added: "The pubs involved will play an important part in helping to manage these drinking areas and we hope that with the help of the drinkers we can make the scheme work.
"By managing the situation we are sending the clear message that we all care about the Quay and we want to make it better."
Dorset Police’s Divisional Commander for Poole, Supt Paul Bompas, said: "The police are committed to this initiative and we believe it will do a great deal to enhance the Quay.
"We will be providing extra officers at the beginning of the scheme to remind drinkers not to wander out of the designated areas."
