Plant a Tree in 2003

The Mayor of Poole, Councillor Ray Smith is rolling up his sleeves and getting stuck in with the support of the Daily Echo to ‘Plant a Tree in 2003’ on Friday 28 November.  He will be joined by members from local businesses and will plant the first six sweet chestnut trees on Holes Bay Road in Poole.

The chestnut trees, 4 metres in height, will be planted at 10 metre intervals, 14 metres back from the carriageway and will create a better visual impact and welcome to Poole. The interval between the trees will also enable residents to still have a clear view across Poole harbour and bay from the road.

Mayor of Poole, Councillor Ray Smith, said: "My intention is, with the benefit of help from professional Arborculturists and from Poole’s leisure services, that we enhance the visual entrance into Poole, especially now with the progression of the regeneration sites in West Quay Road. Having a tree lined avenue will soften and encourage all the wildlife that one would expect from this type of tree and will create a healthy and pleasant environment. Trees and shrubs in urban environments not only give beauty to the surroundings but also help the environment by moderating climate, improving air quality, conserving water and harbouring wildlife. We have at the moment, ten local businesses and individuals who have requested a tree in this location, and I personally will donate a tree and hope I shall be one of the first of many to do so."

Sponsorship of each tree will be between £400 and £500, which will include a plaque and inscription, and there are already several local businesses keen to be involved. The trees, which will hopefully eventually line Holes Bay Road, will create a healthier atmosphere and will begin to build a stronger environment for Poole.
