SPEED CAMERAS - THE MYTHS EXPLODED

Most drivers are aware that speed and red light cameras are dotted around local roads and that they have a positive effect on reducing accidents.

But some drivers believe they can escape detection by these cameras and continue to travel at excessive speeds.

Martin Baker, Road Safety Engineer at the Borough of Poole, said: "Some drivers think they can avoid being photographed by fitting number plates that the manufacturers claim will disguise the registration on the film when it is processed, or by driving on the wrong side of the road.

"Both of these myths are simply not true. There is no number plate currently available that can escape detection by the cameras.

"The sophisticated technology available means that the police can read the registration number under all lighting conditions and whatever material the plate is made from."

Photographs have also been taken of irresponsible motorists driving on the wrong side of the road, usually at excessive speed, assuming they will not be detected by the cameras.

The Borough of Poole Road Safety Section, in conjunction with Dorset Police and the Road Safety sections of Bournemouth and Dorset Councils, is running a campaign to draw peoples' attention to the need to reduce their speed when driving. Excess speed contributes to nearly a third of all accidents on the country's roads.
