New Voice To Speak Out For Young People In Poole

Ruth Bessant recently became the fourth member to be elected to represent young people in Poole as a Member of Youth Parliament (MYP).

It was a close run contest between all 10 candidates who put themselves forward this year. Each candidate carried out a series of ‘road show’ style events at youth clubs, schools and other associations that work with young people to get their messages heard. They also worked with local MP’s Annette Brooke and Robert Syms and other key adults to put together speeches. An officer from the DfES attended the election to give specific advice and guidance on their speeches.

Ruth, 17, attends Parkstone Grammar School, is a volunteer at Bearwood Youth Club and Café Project and an active and committed member of Poole Youth Forum.

On becoming Poole’s new MYP, Ruth said: "I’m absolutely thrilled to have been elected as MYP for Poole and to have the opportunity to continue the great work Lisa Ellaway (last year’s MYP) has been doing over the last year. Politics is an essential area for young people to have a voice and to be involved in as it has a direct impact on everyone. The popularity amongst young people in Poole for this type of event demonstrates how committed young people can be by taking an active role in local issues and having an interest in Politics."

Councillor Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Learning, said: "Poole has a growing commitment to listen to the voice of young people and to promote effective communication for the benefit of us all. We fully support the role of the MYP and it is important that we hear their views on a variety of issues."

Dean New, 16, will act as deputy to Ruth and will support her in her role.
