7 Jul 98MAJOR WORKS ON SCHOOLS ARE WELL UNDERWAY
WORK on an extension at Ashdown School, which was ravaged by fire last year, will begin a term earlier than expected.
Work on an extension to the school has been combined with rebuilding works following the fire and will involve the reconstruction of the music and drama rooms and the provision of five new classrooms.
Ashley Pellegrini, Headteacher of Ashdown School said: "I am delighted that the LEA was foresighted enough to combined the two programmes. The building work should be finalised by January 1999, two terms ahead of schedule! The whole school community is looking forward to the use of the excellent new facilities."
The project is one of several in the 1998/9 capital programme which are being reported to Borough of Poole’s Education Committee on 7 July 1998.
The design of a new eight classroom extension at Talbot Combined School is now well underway. The extension is to replace eight mobile classrooms and the project is being funded by the Government’s 1998 New Deal initiative.
Completed projects include phase 1 of the refurbishment of the accommodation at the former South Road Combined School to create the new Old Town First School and Nursery.
The extension work at Alderney Middle School to provide specialist teaching accommodation is on line for completion early in the summer holidays. The extension will provide new technology rooms, a music room and four new classrooms. A similar project at Haymoor Middle School is also nearing completion.
Vic Sandel, Head of Education Policy and Planning, said: "By the end of 1998 the Council will have carried out major capital works to at least 20% of the Borough’s schools and during 1999 this figure will increase to almost 30%."
