LITERACY HOUR FOR POOLE SCHOOLS

Preparations are now being made to introduce the Literacy Hour into all Poole schools with primary age children on their roll.

The National Literacy Strategy is a key feature of the government’s policy to raise standards and the Literacy Hour is a central part of this initiative.

At Borough of Poole’s recent Education Committee meeting, Councillors were given a presentation about the current implementation in the Borough.

All headteachers, literacy co-ordinators and literacy governors have attended a two day conference organised by Poole’s School Advice & Support Service and led by the Literacy Adviser, John Mursell.

This will be followed up by a series of training sessions offering intensive support to teachers, including a major conference for 300 teachers at the start of next term which will be addressed by Kevin Jeffery, Regional Director of the National Literacy Strategy.

John Mursell is very positive about this initiative. He commented: "The evidence from the pilot schools throughout the country has shown how effective this new approach can be in raising standards of literacy.

"Although a great deal of planning is involved and schools are having to make adjustments to other areas of the curriculum, there is a general recognition that the structure and support materials will be invaluable in helping pupils to achieve their potential."
