15 Jul 98SPORTING WELCOME FOR POOLE MP
Mid Dorset and North Poole MP, Christopher Fraser, will see one of the many ways lottery money is being spent when he visits the Kemp-Welch Leisure Centre on Friday 10 July 1998.
In 1996 the then Poole Borough Council was awarded £2,481,247 towards a total project cost of £4,413,610 from the Lottery Sports Fund. The money was used to construct the 25-metre, 6-lane swimming pool, gymnastics and trampolining training halls.
On Friday the local MP will be shown around the sports complex and see some of the many sports displayed during the tour.
Martin Drennan, Senior Development Officer for the English Sports Council will welcome Mr Fraser. He commented: "This project is a fine example of a community development on a school site which includes specialist facilities for trampolining and gymnastics.
"The Lottery Sports Fund grant has enabled the leisure centre to boast high quality training areas and provide a facility that the local area can be proud of.
"The English Sports Council is pleased to have been able to invest its Lottery funding in such a high quality centre, the design of which shows a great deal of imagination. We look forward to showing Mr Fraser the very good use to which the money has been put."
Allan Ferris, Head of the Council’s Leisure Contract Services Unit, added: "The centre is now up and running and proving very popular with local people. It is also a major attraction for those achieving high levels in sports like trampolining and gymnastics and we hope to produce some champions of the future."
