The Borough of Poole has been awarded £13,200 by the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the cost of preparing an Historic Landscape Survey and Management Plan for Poole Park.David Neudegg, Head of Leisure Services, said: "We are using this Lottery award to commission Gillespies, one the country's leading landscape consultancy firms.
"Led by Professor Rodney Beaumont they will work closely with Leisure Services staff on the production of a plan that will help us ensure that Poole Park is preserved for future generations to enjoy."
Opened in 1890 by HRH the Prince of Wales, Poole Park has a number of important and unusual features including ornamental terracotta ware on the entrance pillars and a cycle track encircling the cricket pitch. The park also boasts a cricket pavilion designed by George Jennings, a local craftsman and designer with an international reputation.
The layout of the park remains largely unaltered from its original design and although the Council have invested almost £450,000 on capital works in the park during the past 10 years it is in need of substantial restoration.
Cllr Andrew Muspratt, Chairman of the Culture & Leisure Committee, "This award is great news. It is the first award made by the Heritage Lottery Fund in Poole and will enable us to review the park's current condition and plan for its future."
The work, which will cost up to £27,000, will include a detailed study of the algae problem on Poole Lake which has caused a number of problems in recent years.
