22 Jul 98POOLE LEADS THE WAY IN REDUCING 'SCHOOL RUN' TRAFFIC
Poole Councillors are already discussing ways to reduce ‘school run’ traffic, as highlighted by Transport Secretary John Prescott in his Transport Strategy paper this week (20 July 1998).
A working party of officers from Borough of Poole’s Education Policy and Planning and Highways and Transportation Units is considering ways to ease congestion on routes to school.
One idea is to encourage parents to co-operate with each other and take more children in their car or by foot.
Cllr Michael Plummer hopes parents will want to set up ‘buddying’ schemes. He said: "John Prescott has pointed out that ‘school run’ traffic is a major contributor to traffic congestion.
"Using a scheme like this we can reduce the number of cars being used, improve road safety around schools and cut down on the stress suffered by parents trying to get their children to school."
A report on the scheme is due to be presented to the Council’s Education Committee in the autumn.
