17 Sep 04Well Done for Borough of Poole Residents
The first 2 weeks of collections have now been carried out on the Borough of Poole’s new kerbside recycling collection scheme. We are delighted with the take up of the new scheme and have witnessed a 85% participation rate.
It is evident that the Poole residents really do want this scheme to succeed by the level of support we are experiencing. The Borough of Poole wishes to thank residents for backing this scheme so wholeheartedly.
Peter Pawlowski, Head of Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole, said: “The residents of Poole have embraced the new scheme and the tonnages collected have been extremely encouraging. Early indications are that the scheme is a success and we can build on this success with your continued support.
“We used to collect 60 tonnes per fortnight on the previous black box collection scheme. The tonnage collected on the new scheme for the last two weeks is in excess of 600 tonnes. Ten times the previous amount!”
This is a significant saving of recycling material not being sent to landfill.
Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: “To divert this tonnage away from landfill in a fortnight indicates a job very well done. To continue these figures would be incredible and make a serious impact on the tough government targets we have been set.”
Consumer Protection Services are aware that not all flats have received a recycling bin yet. There is a special team assigned to this and most flats have now been assessed as to their requirements and bins are now being delivered. If you still have not received this facility by the beginning of October please do call us on 01202 261700. In addition, we are taking details of requests for larger bins and will contact you once we have a better view on exactly how we can meet your needs.
There were some concerns as to the initial level of contamination that would be found. Especially from plastic bags used to contain recycling materials being placed into the recycling bins. Again, we have to congratulate residents for taking the time to read our literature thoroughly, ensuring the contamination levels seen are encouragingly low. Contamination can lead to a load being rejected, so we will continue to monitor the collections from properties and advise if found.
We are also aware that Green Waste is a concern for many residents. Borough of Poole will be reviewing its strategy on Green Waste over the next few months with a view to introducing a solution in the new year.
