LAUNCH OF 'BREATHING SPACE' INITIATIVE

‘Breathing Space’ is a new joint initiative which aims to ensure that people can go to a pub in Poole and enjoy a drink untroubled by cigarette smoke. Partners of the scheme are the Borough of Poole and HealthWorks, Dorset’s Health Promotion Agency, together with generous sponsorship by the Dolphin Shopping Centre.

According to Bristol University’s Academic Research, non smokers in Poole outnumber smokers by more than two to one. There is irrefutable evidence to show that smoking poses a serious health risk to smokers and non smokers.
For some people, cigarette smoke in enclosed public places also causes coughing, sore eyes and smelly clothes.

The first pubs to sign up to the scheme in Poole include: The Kings Head - High Street, The Portsmouth Hoy - Poole Quay, The Hogshead - High Street and The Hogshead - Ashley Road. They will be met by the Mayor who will present each of them with a certificate to help promote their non smoking bar areas.

Councillor Graham Curtis, Chairman of the Public Protection Committee said, "Although these pubs are not entirely smoke free, they have decided, very commendably, to offer their customers the choice of drinking in a non-smoking area."

David Wilkins - HealthWorks Health Promotion Co-ordinator (Poole) said, "Smoking is a personal decision and it’s the individual’s right to make that choice. However, it is also important to remember that a great majority of people are non smokers which is why ‘Breathing Space’ aims to encourage and support the pubs in Poole who choose to offer smoke free bar areas to customers".
