Cycling is an enjoyable, efficient and sustainable mode of transport. The Road Safety Section of the Highways and Transportation Services at the Borough of Poole together with a number of road safety organisations have become increasingly concerned with the number and severity of injuries sustained by cyclists, who have inadvertently strayed into the blind spots of large vehicles.
The Road Safety Education Officer for the Borough of Poole said:
‘We have already had one fatality in the Borough and several slight injury accidents involving cyclists and left-turning heavy goods vehicles over recent years. The likelihood of such conflicts which can lead to the most tragic of outcomes for the cyclist will continue to grow, unless we actively try to change the behaviour of cyclists and drivers of large vehicles.’
If you would like more information about this current awareness campaign or you would like to request copies of the new National Cycling Stategy ‘Cyclists and Lorries’ education leaflet that the Cyclists and HGVs Working Group has produced, please contact Lesley Hart of the Road Safety Education Team - telephone number 01202 262065.
