GRANT BOOST TO GIVE POOLE PEOPLE ACCESS TO THE INTERNET

Borough of Poole is one of a handful of Councils to receive funding which will help open up Internet access to the people of the town.

Poole's Library Service has been awarded £77,331 from the Department for Culture Media and Sport/Wolfson Public Libraries Challenge Fund towards a £154,000 project.

The money will go towards networking all of Poole's 10 libraries, as well as its proposed new Local Studies Centre at the Waterfront Museum, to give the public access to the Internet, information held on CD-ROMS and word processing facilities.

Poole's was one of only 21 successful bids out of 74 applicants, with only two others in the South West region.

Cllr Andrew Muspratt, Chair of the Borough of Poole's Culture and Leisure Committee, said: "We are delighted to have received this grant towards improving the public IT facilities at our libraries.

"Providing public access to the Internet and CD-ROM facilities is an important platform from which we can start to build an effective public access system throughout the Borough.

"This could be extended in the future and offers opportunities for partnerships with local businesses. It will all go towards improving public access to information in Poole."
