Poole Safe Award Gold to the Blue Boar

Pubs in Poole have been recognised and accredited for their hard work and excellent management skills by the Poole Safe initiative. Poole Safe is a recent initiative supported by Dorset Police and the Borough of Poole which actively aims to reduce incidents of alcohol related violent crime and disorder across the Poole area.

Licensee Tim Welford was presented the Gold Award for the Blue Boar for being the safest licensed premise in Poole by Sky News presenter, Steve Dixon, at the Haven Hotel in Sandbanks. The Silver Award was presented to John Frew of Yates in Poole High Street whilst Ed Cox and Fiona Bowden, licensees of the Custom House situated on Poole Quay, picked up the Bronze Award for their premises.

Tim Welford, Licensee of the Blue Boar, said: "The Poole Safe initiative is fantastic, this evening has been brilliant. On behalf of the Blue Boar thank you for this award, we are so pleased to have won."

The Poole Safe and Daily Echo Licensee of the Year Award went to Deborah Harper from The Globe in Poole High Street.

Neal Butterworth, Editor of the Daily Echo who presented the award, said: "The premises have been transformed by this licensee and the atmosphere has changed considerably."

Licensees who applied through the scheme have had their premise assessed across all elements of their operation. These included issues such as their policies on drugs and alcohol, door staff, CCTV and general safety guidelines that the licensee enforces. Those that have not been accredited have been given feedback for possible improvement.

Martin Baker, Chief Constable of Dorset Police, said: "The evening has proved the value of working together in partnership. The licensed trade has become increasingly professional and this evening has reflected this brilliantly."

20 of the accredited premises of the scheme attended the evening to receive a certificate. These include: Déjà vu, The Haymoor, King’s Head, The Globe Café, Jolly Sailor, Custom House, The Edge, Portsmouth Hoy, Café Shore, Red Lion, Blue Boar, Chilli’s, Bowlplex, The Woodman, Bankes Bistro, The Pilot, Henry’s, The Angel Inn, Yates and Corkers.

The Awards have been based on the safest establishment and not the busiest or most popular. Excellent practice and management are key elements to the assessment criteria.
