Councillor David Newell and children from Hamworthy First School joined the contractors, Bluestone, at the new Hamworthy First School site today for the topping out, a traditional ceremony carried out when the exterior structure is complete.  Pupils will transfer from the old First School and Nursery to the new building during the 2004 Spring term, parents will be advised nearer the time.

The £5.44 million Hamworthy schools development is really taking shape. The project to provide a new First School and Nursery, improvements to the Middle School and a new sports hall for Carter Community Sports College is well on the way, with completion due by December 2003.

The First and Middle schools will retain their own identities as separate schools but will be physically linked and there will be tremendous potential for liaison. There will be separate playground areas.

The First School and Nursery will also have a new dedicated access. In addition there will be a new pedestrian crossing on Blandford Road making it easier for pupils and parents to get to the schools.

Councillor Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Learning said: "This £5.44 million project will provide modern facilities for the pupils of Hamworthy, which will help to raise educational standards and have benefits for the wider community. I very much look forward to its completion."

Clare Taylor, Headteacher of Hamworthy First School and Nursery, said: "I am very excited that this project is delivering a new First School and Nursery with facilities that will benefit both pupils and teachers. I also look forward to us working closely with the Middle School on the same site."

Angie Best, Headteacher of Hamworthy Middle School, said: "I look forward to the First School and Nursery joining us and the educational benefits that will flow from this."

Dave Pratten, Headteacher of Carter Community Sports College, said: "I very much welcome the addition of the new sports hall, which will enhance the current range of facilities available at the College.

Paul Gale, construction manager, Bluestone, the local construction firm carrying out the work, said: "We are delighted to be involved with this project. We are enjoying working with the schools and the Borough of Poole to create a wonderful new learning environment for their pupils. We are confident the children will get a great deal of enjoyment out of their new schools for generations to come."
