7 Aug 03Soaring heat hits Poole Bridge
Poole’s lifting bridge gave in to soaring temperatures when the bridge was unable to re-open to traffic after the 12.30 lift today. John Rice, Engineering Manager, said: "The problem with the lifting bridge was due to exceptionally high temperatures today. After the bridge went up for the regular 12.30 lift, the steel had expanded in the extreme heat, preventing it from closing again properly. There is an in-built safety device which stops the barriers from lifting unless the leaves have securely bolted together." To cool the structure, the Council's maintenance staff responded within minutes and sea water was pumped over the deck enabling the bridge to re-open as soon as possible and prevent further problems. Road passengers were delayed for an extra 30 minutes beyond the normal lift. He added: "We would like to offer our apologies for the traffic delays caused as a result of this temporary problem. The situation will be monitored closely during the current heat wave and if necessary water will be pumped over the bridge again. The bridge has experienced problems with heat before, but not in recent years which reflects the exceptional weather conditions at the present time."
