15 Sep 98Public Art Residency at Martin Kemp Welch School
Starting on 28th September 1998 and running for a period of eight weeks, there will be an Artists Residency at Martin Kemp Welch School. The purpose of the residency is for crafts people to work with students at the school to design and make a series of mosaic murals for the new swimming poole and gym complex.
For eight weeks crafts people Stephanie Roberts and Matthew Station will work with the students at the school on possible designs for the murals. Students will take part in design and drawing workshops with the theme how movement effects our daily lives and movement around the buildings. Students will be involved in the creation of ceramics including, cutting and shaping ceramic tiles and ending with the construction of the murals.
Anne Partington-Omar (Arts and Heritage Manager) said "This Arts Residency is extrenely important as it will allow the students to meet and work with crafts people. It means that the students at the school will play a part in the provision of a public work of art in an area in which they live and spend their time."
Jeff Hart (Head of Schools Support and Advice Service) said " I am delighted that the Martin Kemp Welch School is involved in this exciting arts initiative. The school already offers a stimulating programme for the arts and this residency will add a good deal to the arts programme."
