Annual Seatbelt Counts

The Road Safety Team of the Highways and Transportation Services at the Borough of Poole will again be carrying out their annual seatbelt counts outside selected schools in the Borough, commencing 21st September 1998.

Lesley Hart, the Road Safety Education Officer, for the Borough of Poole, said:

"Last year's campaign showed that of the children counted, almost one third of children were not belted in. Parents seem unaware that it is illegal to carry an unrestrained child in the front seat of any vehicle and that seatbelts and child restraints must be worn if they are available."

All schools have been informed and as a result of being offered further supplies of the 'Wise-Up' information leaflet requests are coming into the Road Safety office each day.

A commercial which commenced on 14th September 1998 is being broadcast three times a day from Monday to Friday on 2CRFM and Classic Gold 828.

As a follow-up to our seatbelt counts, if we find any particular schools with large numbers of children who are not belted in correcnly, members of Dorset Police Casualty Reduction Team will be supporting our campaign by carrying our further checks outside these schools.

If you would like further in-car safety advice and/or supplies of the 'Wise-Up' leaflet please telephone Lesley Hart at the Road Safety Office at St John's House on 01202 262065.
