First Year For Poole Area Child Protection Committee

POOLE’S Area Child Protection Committee (ACPC) has spent its first year getting different agencies to work together effectively to protect the welfare of the Borough’s children.

The Committee was set up when Borough of Poole became a Unitary Authority in April 1997 to develop, monitor and review child protection policies.

Poole ACPC, which includes representatives from health, social services, the police, the NSPCC, probation and education, is working closely with both Bournemouth and Dorset ACPCs.

The three Committees have a joint child Protection Register, administered by Dorset, but Poole aims to have its own register from 2000.

Child protection referrals to Social Services have decreased over the past three years. There were 267 referrals in 1996/7 compared to 230 referrals in 1997/98, a decrease of 16%.

Jan Thurgood, Head of Children and Families and Chair of Poole ACPC said: "The good news is that the decrease in referral sugests an increase in the support families are receiving.

"In its first year, Poole Area Child Protection Committee has benefited from the active and constructive participation of all the agencies. This has enabled the Committee to fulfil its duties and to develop new lcoal initiatives, particularly in the area of training for staff".
