30 Sep 98Borough of Poole Plant Nursery
Following the receipt of Competitive Tenders for the maintenance of the Borough’s Parks and Open Spaces, the Council’s Nursery Site in Poole Park will no longer be used to supply bedding plants for the Borough’s displays throughout the town. Four Companies (including the Council’s own workforce) submitted bids and none of them have opted to use the existing Nursery facility. The Nursery currently employs two full time staff, both of whom will be offered alternative employment with the new operator.
Councillor Andrew Muspratt said "The operators submitting tenders have taken a commercial decision that it is not economically viable to supply the quantity and range of plants required from this site. This has resulted in considerable savings for the Council which are being reinvested into improving the quality of maintenance on our Parks and Open Spaces".
The future use of the site which is part of Poole Park and controlled by strict covenants on its use will be considered within the Management Plan currently being developed for the Park. An internationally acclaimed landscape company is currently developing proposals for a restoration plan which has been supported by a grant from the National Lottery. All proposals for the Park including any relating to the future use of the Nursery Site will be subject to full consultation with the local community.
Councillor Muspratt said "In many ways it is a very sad day that we are unable to continue to supply bedding plants directly within the borough. The staff have been producing quality plants and advice for many years. Their efforts and skill have greatly enhanced Poole’s reputation as a beautiful place. The town owes them all a great debt of gratitude".
A decision to appoint the new operator for the maintenance of the Borough’s Parks and Open spaces will be made on 2 October 1998.
