30 Sep 98Poole's concessionary travel scheme success
Pensioners and registered disabled people living in Poole can benefit from reduced public transport fares. This can be either in the form of a voucher which can be used in part-payment of a half-fare bus pass or National Travel tokens for use on buses, trains and in some taxis.
The scheme has been in existence for a number of years and take-up of has increased by over 60 per cent in the last 5 years, reflecting the scheme’s popularity.
This year the value of the bus voucher has been increased by £5 to £25 to encourage greater use of local bus services in the area. The value of the tokens was reduced, but, following representations from disabled people, it is proposed to also offer £25 worth of tokens (£30 of tokens for a payment of £5) for people unable to use buses. The Council’s Planning & Transportation Committee will consider the proposal on Thursday 1 October.
Chairman of the Borough of Poole’s Planning & Transportation Committee, Cllr Jeff Allen, said: "The Council is committed to the promotion of public transport and is proud to be able to offer assistance to elderly and disabled people in the Borough.
"The Government’s recent transport White Paper confirms the value of concessionary travel and all authorities will be required to offer a scheme. Poole has got it right again."
Anyone wishing to apply for concessionary travel should call in at Revenue and Benefits Services at the Civic Centre or telephone on 634249.
