12 Oct 98Ideas Unveiled For A Falkland Square Facelift
Ideas for the improvement of Falkland Square will be on display in the Square on Saturday 17th October from 10am - 4pm. The work will be ready for the Millennium and will celebrate Poole’s 750th Anniversary.
The scheme, being prepared by a partnership of landowners and the Council, will transform the Square into a spectacular place at the heart of Poole’s shopping centre. They want to make it a better place to shop and somewhere people will want to spend more time. There’ll be more space, better seating and an imaginative paving pattern.
The artist Rachel Fenner will be there to describe her designs and talk to people about her work. Come along between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 17th October and see what you think of her ideas.
The proposals will remove the existing brick planters and introduce a brightly coloured paving pattern, including a flat maze, mosaics, new lighting and other specially designed street furniture. The idea is that they all reflect the history and character of Poole.
"An unusual aspect of this scheme is that it’s not a purely Council sponsored project" explained Cllr Bob Williams, a member of the "Town Centre Initiative, "It’s a Partnership project and most of the money will come from the landowners surrounding the Square."
There are three funders for the scheme : Britel Fund Trustees, owners of the Dolphin Shopping Centre; Legal and General, who own the southern half of the Square; and Liverpool Victoria, who recently built the new parade of shops. All of them are paying for the design and are putting in an equal amount to get the scheme built. Indeed, it was from their suggestions to improve the area that the scheme grew.
The intention is to make an application to the Arts Lottery Fund for a grant. The level of grant will determine the level of scheme that is built. The more money there is, the more improvements can be done.
