This signs will be in place by Monday 2nd November 1998 on Gravel Hill (near Darby's Corner) and Parkstone Road (near the Civic Centre)
Traffic signs are to be put up to encourage drivers in Poole to "double up and halve the queues". As part of the Borough of Poole's TravelWise campaign, car sharing is being promoted as a means of reducing car congestion at peak times around the town.
The Borough's Transportation Manager, Chris Francombe, said "If all the workers in Poole and Bournemouth town centres just shared one day a week, it would have the same effect as spending £200 million on junction improvements. It really is that effective".
TravelWise, the national campaign supported by over 70 organisations, including Poole, Bournemouth and Dorset Councils, advocates sensible use of the car by promoting walking, cycling, use of Public Transport and car sharing.
The Transport White Paper highlights the fact that we can begin to make a difference through reviewing our travelling habits and trying to reduce our dependence on our cars for every journey.
Kathy Saunders, Borough Of Poole Travel Awareness Officer, is developing a car sharing scheme for Borough of Poole employees with the possibility of the scheme being expanded to other employers if it is sucessful. "The Council is looking at reviewing staff travel - a car sharing scheme is a great way of reducing the number of cars on the roads with only one person in them and it helps reduce stress".
Councillor Jeff Allen, Chairman of Poole's Planning And Transportation Committee, said "The Council is committed to finding ways to tackle congestion and pollution around the town. *It is not good enough to carry on as we are now - we want Poole to continue to be a Beautiful Place for future generations".
