14 Jun 04National Liftshare Day 2004
The Borough of Poole is supporting National Liftshare Day 2004 which takes place on Monday 14th June as part of Green-Transport Week. With the increasing cost of fuel, thousands of people are expected to get involved.
There are numerous benefits to car sharing. By splitting the costs of travel, drivers and passengers can beat the rising cost of fuel, and congestion and pollution are greatly reduced.
To help car sharing can be organised on-line or over the phone for FREE with the assistance of liftshare.com. To join, simply register at www.carsharedorset.com
and enter your journey details. Drivers can search for people to give lifts to, whilst passengers can search for lifts to any destination in the UK.
Following the success of last year's efforts, National Liftshare Day will once again be used to raise funds for Asthma UK, to assist research into the links between vehicle pollution and asthma. Pollution is the biggest concern for people with asthma in the UK where more than 5 million people now have asthma, including 1 in 8 children. Seventy per cent of people with asthma say that traffic pollution makes their asthma worse.
Cllr Ron Parker, Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: "Hundreds of people are already benefiting from carsharedorset.com since its launch in January, saving money and helping ease congestion around the county. We want more people to join the scheme and be part of the growing group of sharers.
"By encouraging people to share cars, the organisers of National Liftshare Day hope to reduce the number of cars on our roads and so reduce pollution. In doing so they aim to improve air quality and also raise valuable funds for Asthma UK."
