Tackling Domestic Violence

A report will presented at the next meetings of the Borough of Poole Housing Committee and Social Services Committee on the issue of Domestic Violence and how it should be tackled in our community.

Nationally, domestic violence continues to be the most common violent crime against women in England and Wales. An estimated 835,000 incidences occurred in 1997 (1998 British Crime Survey). ‘Supporting Families’ is a new national guidelines consultation document in which it is made clear that tackling domestic violence is a crucial part of the Government’s Family Policy and that domestic violence must be viewed as unacceptable in our society.

This is reflected in Poole by a Council initiative to raise awareness to domestic violence. The Council will be working with voluntary sector services, churches and statutory services (Police, Health, Housing, Education and Social Services) to prevent domestic violence and provide support and safety to those who suffer from it. In addition the Council will be raising the awareness of staff on how to tackle issues of domestic violence and look at the kinds of services which are required to help those who suffer domestic violence.
