Safety Code for Poole Taxi Drivers

Dorset Police, Poole Council and the Poole Crime Prevention Panel have joined forces to produce a detailed leaflet to help Taxi and Private Hire drivers to be more secure. \n

The leaflet will contain invaluable advice on how drivers can stay safe while still providing an excellent service to those who use their taxis and all 385 taxi and private hire drivers across Poole will receive the leaflet.

Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio for Local Economy, said: "Taxis’ and private hire vehicles are an important part of our public transportation network. Our taxi drivers do an invaluable job often having to put themselves on the front line with the occasional rowdy passenger. This leaflet not only gives vital information on how our taxi drivers can keep safe but also offers them a chain of support."

Poole Crime Prevention Officer, John Pearce, said: "Even though the number of incidents involving taxi drivers is low, we see this as an ideal opportunity to inform all drivers about the dangers that they may face, especially when dealing with people who may have had too much to drink."

Nick Phillips, Senior Passenger Transport Co-ordinator, Borough of Poole, said: "Our taxi drivers provide an invaluable service taking people home after a night out, often in difficult circumstances. Attacks on drivers in the town are thankfully rare but we hope this guide will make drivers aware of potential situations. This is the first in a series of joint initiatives to improve safety for both taxi drivers and their customers."

Jim McLees, Chair of the Poole Crime Prevention Panel is pleased to be associated with this Police initiative. "Fortunately, threatening and violent behaviour against taxi drivers is only occasional in Poole but incidents do happen. If this leaflet, with its common sense advice, helps drivers to be aware of the potential risks they face and how to avoid them then it will make a worthwhile contribution to taxi driver safety."

The leaflet covers twelve main topics including working at night, memorising the suspects description, using the right type of vehicle, vehicle tracking systems should the car be stolen and effective use of the radio system.
