30 Nov 98A New Library For Upper Parkstone
A two day public exhibition is to give local residents the opportunity to comment on proposals to move Branksome Library.
The Library is currently located at Shillito Road in Upper Parkstone. The building is 30 years old and suffers from poor layout and high heating and maintenance costs.
The Council is proposing to move the Library to new premises in a terrace of shops at 214-220 Ashley Road, which is just around the corner. The plan includes demolishing the existing vacant shops and build a new, purpose built 3 storey building with the new Library on the ground floor and 7 flats on the floors above. These will provide short term accommodation for homeless people. The proposed library would be smaller than the existing building but would be designed to meet the changing needs of the Library Service.
‘A Library should be a valuable community asset and this is why we want to know the views of local people. The role of the Library is also evolving, it no longer deals just with books but now can also offer tapes, CDs and soon, the Internet. With a new purpose built facility, we can offer a full range of services in a more economical building.’ said Cllr Andrew Muspratt, Chairman of Culture & Leisure Committee.
The public exhibition will be held on Wednesday 2 December 1998 at the Loch Road Baptist Church and Friday 4 December 1998 at Branksome Library, Shillito Road between 2-7pm both days. The exhibition will be staffed by representatives from the Library Service, Housing and Property Services of the Council. It will include artists impressions of what the new building will look like.
‘We’d like to invite local residents to come along, see the plans and discuss their views with us,’ said Cllr Muspratt. ‘We can then consider this feedback when the final decision is taken on the Library at our next Committee meeting,’ he added.
Anyone who is unable to attend the exhibition is invited to send their comments to Bob Harris, Head of Democratic Services, Borough of Poole, Civic Centre, Poole BH15 2RU - to arrive no later than Monday 14 December 1998.
