Statement By The Borough Of Poole

On Tuesday 8 December, the Borough of Poole’s Consumer Protection Services and TRANSCO received reports of a gas smell from members of the public in a number of locations.

Inspection by TRANSCO engineers found no gas leaks.

Investigations by BP indicate that vapour from approximately 0.5 litres of odourant was accidentally released from their Wytch Farm Gathering Station near Corfe Castle.

Odourant is a substance added to natural gas (which is otherwise odourless) to assist the detection of leaks. It has a powerful and unpleasant smell and is deliberately detectable, even in very low concentrations.

The quantity of odourant released indicates that the concentrations in the surrounding atmosphere were just at, or slightly above, the threshold of smell and pose no risk to health or the environment.

BP liased throughout with the Borough of Poole, TRANSCO and Dorset Health Authority. BP are undertaking a full investigation and have implemented appropriate procedures to prevent recurrence.
