Christmas Message from the Mayor of Poole Cllr Graham Curtis

1998 has been a wonderful year in Poole during which we have been able to celebrate our town’s rich history as well as its many new successes.

As celebrations for the 750th anniversary of the Longspee Charter continued throughout the year, one of the focuses of celebration was the "Day in the Life of Poole" held on 22nd June. Local people gave a wonderful response and recorded their day in many creative ways and many of the contributions form part of an exciting exhibition which reopens at the Waterfront Museum on Saturday 19 December following a successful show at Poole Arts Centre.

Poole’s assets have received much deserved recognition this year with the continued achievement of the Blue Flag for Sandbanks, whilst nationally, visits by the BBC’s Holiday programme, Antiques Roadshow, and Blind Date have shown the rest of the country that Poole is indeed "a beautiful place to live, work, learn and play".

Residents and visitors experienced the vibrant carnival atmosphere during the popular Liverpool Victoria Summer Festival evenings in July and August, and in September as well as the ancient Beating of the Sea Bounds ceremony, the start panel for the Cockle Trail was unveiled. The trail, which is due to be completed by Easter 1999, encourages visitors and residents to take an interesting walk around our town and explains its proud past.

As part of my duties I have been able to support two excellent charities during my year as Mayor. The Julia Perks Foundation which aims to provide respite care facilities for terminally ill children and their parents and Marie Curie Cancer Care which supports people with Cancer through research, education and nursing care. Both of these Charities provide vital support which is desperately needed and I hope that people will help our efforts to raise as much as possible for these deserving causes.

I would like to thank the people of Poole for their support during the last year and take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Healthy and Happy new year.
