Transport Policies And Programme Settlement 1999/2000

The Government Office for the South West has announced the Local Transport Capital Expenditure Settlement for 1999/2000.

Borough of Poole’s total settlement for Transportation and Maintenance is £1,507,000 which compares favourably with £334,000 last year.

The total Transport Package bid awarded to the conurbation is £1,250,000 of which Poole was allocated £727,000 while Bournemouth and Christchurch received £371,000 and £152,000 respectively.

Cllr Jeff Allen, Chairman of Poole’s Planning and Transportation Committee said: "I am delighted. This is significantly better than last year’s settlement, and will allow earlier improvements to be made for bus passengers, cyclists and pedestrians. Our aim is to encourage people to rely less on their cars for short journeys and use public transport for the longer ones. We also hope to bring forward schemes to help disabled people and improve junctions that have a high concentration of accidents."

An award of £780,000 was also made for the maintenance of Poole’s Highways and has been divided into £450,000 for the structural maintenance of specific principal roads in Poole and £330,000 for the assessment and strengthening of bridges.
