23 Dec 98Junior Pupil Forum
Resolutions on these subjects were presented to the Mayor, with a request that Elected Members and officers of the Council give consideration to these issues. The next meeting of the Forum will take place on 11 February 1998, where further actions to support the resolutions will be considered.
The Borough of Poole’s Junior Pupil Forum got off to a flying start when school delegates presented their arguments on a wide variety of subjects at an inaugural meeting held on 23 November 1998.
The Forum’s purpose is to encourage ‘citizenship’ in pupils by allowing them to influence Council policy on matters of particular interest to them, to their school and their local area.
Pupils between the ages of 7 and 12 attend the forum, with one representative elected from each of the Borough’s schools. The meetings, which include Borough of Poole Councillors will take place four times a year.
The first meeting was attended by the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Graham Curtis, who said: "It was interesting to hear which areas concerned young people the most. Road safety issues such the provision of additional cycle paths, improved access to off road sites and safer school car parking facilities were all high of high importance".
He added: "There was also a clear message for the Borough of Poole to provide even more recycling facilities specifically for schools because young people want to increase their involvement".
Councillor Mrs Annette Brooke, Chairman of Education Committee, said "It is important that young people have an opportunity to make their views known, so that all viewpoints can be considered when Council decisions are made".
Resolutions on these subjects were presented to the Mayor, with a request that Elected Members and officers of the Council give consideration to these issues. The next meeting of the Forum will take place on 11 February 1998, where further actions to support the resolutions will be considered.
