27 Jan 06YOT Tackles Challenges Ahead
Bournemouth and Poole Youth Offending Team (YOT) is the latest service to go 'under the spotlight' following a joint inspection in July and September last year.
A report published January 25 2006 said the inspection showed: "A service that was tackling the challenges of operating across two unitary authorities, with some notable successes." A number of areas have been highlighted for improvement, particularly the development of work with victims of crime.
The YOT inspection covers five core areas of work:
· Management and partnership arrangements
· Work in courts
· Work with children and young people in the community
· Work with children and young people subject to detention and training orders
· Victims and restorative justice.
The working relationship between the YOT and the courts was scored as 'good'. Management, working with children and young people in the community and those with Detention and Training Orders (DTO's), was described as 'adequate' with victims and restorative justice being scored as 'inadequate'.
Vicky Wales, Chair of the Bournemouth and Poole Youth Offending Team Chief Officer Group, said: "We welcome the recommendations of this thorough inspection and are particularly pleased that our good work with the courts has been recognised. Some restructuring of the team has already taken place which puts us in a better position to develop in the areas highlighted by the inspection as in need of improvement. In particular work with victims has improved considerably."
The inspection report proposes a number of recommendations and an action plan will now be drawn up.
