Flooding at Cabot Lane

A ditch in land adjacent to Cabot Lane has been causing problems for motorists. Investigations by Borough of Poole Transportation Officers into the source of flooding at Cabot Lane have revealed that a ditch, which crosses private land, has been filled in by landowners, causing a large section of the road to flood.

Currently, the Borough of Poole has authority under the Highways Act to reconnect Council owned drains to existing drainage systems, but cannot undertake work on privately owned land without permission. However, the level of the nearest drainage system is too high to deal with water in the ditch which cannot be cleared by this route without an expensive pumping system.

Progress on the problem has been limited due to disputed boundaries, but discussions with landowners are continuing. Steve Tite, Highways manager said: "Once the issue of land ownership has been clarified, a legal notice informing landowners of the Council's intention to act will be served and a number of options and estimates presented to them".

Cllr Jeff Allen, Chairman of the Planning and Transportation Committee said: "In the short term, temporary measures to alleviate the extent of the flooding have been introduced and I can assure drivers affected that everything within our power is being done to resolve the situation".

Ward member for Creekmoor, Cllr Sandra Moore said: " The combination of this problem with the current bad weather is causing extreme disruption to residents and workers in the area and will be sorted out as a matter of urgency".
