Lodge Hill Swimming Pool Latest

The outbreak of the stomach bug, Cryptosporidium, associated with the swimming pool at Lodge Hill at Darby’s Corner in Poole has now affected nine people with a further three suspected cases being checked.

It is thought that the majority of the additional cases are as a result of the Health Protection Unit and Council’s decision to publicise the outbreak and encourage people who might have the illness to visit their GP.

Allan Ferris, Leisure Services, Borough of Poole, said: "We are working hard with our colleagues in Environmental & Consumer Protection Services to ensure that the pool is fully cleaned prior to reopening.  Samples of the water are being taken and the pool will remain shut until we are confident that there is no risk to the users.  The number of people now affected shows that it was the right decision to close the pool as a precaution.  We wish all those affected a speedy recovery.”

Officers from Leisure Services have arranged for work to be carried out over the next few weeks, which will involve a thorough cleansing procedure of the pool.  Further details will be available once the pool has been fully inspected and it will remain shut until it is confirmed the work has been successful.

Cryptosporidium is a relatively common illness often associated with water.  Although unpleasant, it is rarely serious, with the main symptoms being diarrhoea, stomach cramps and bloating.  It usually takes between seven and 10 days for symptoms to develop.

Should anyone be worried that they or a member of their family are suffering from these symptoms, they should see their GP as soon as possible.  They should also ensure high standards
of personal hygiene at all times at all times as the infection can spread from person to person.

The swimming pool run by the Borough of Poole’s Leisure Services is largely used by community clubs and schools. It was closed on December 5 after the first confirmed cases of the illness and will remain closed until satisfactory sample results are achieved.
