School Results Published

The Borough of Poole has published today the table of results for the National Curriculum Assessments of 11 year olds that took place in Poole schools last year. Although the 1998 results at Key Stage 2 showed a slight dip compared with the previous year, performance in Poole was very close to the national average.

Mr Jeff Hart, Head of the School Advice and Support Service, said: "The achievements of children in Poole are the result of hard work by themselves, their schools and their families. We are very pleased with their efforts."

He went on to say, "The tables record assessment in English, mathematics and science which, while important, is only a small part of the work of pupils and teachers in schools. We must remember also the other subjects and aspects of learning going on in our schools for all year groups, who continue to be supported in achieving well."

The Borough is not complacent about standards being achieved in its schools and there is a clear intention to raise attainment further in all key stages. The Authority has already introduced the National Literacy Strategy into its schools and recently launched the National Numeracy Strategy, which will be implemented from next September.

The Chair of the Education Committee, Cllr Annette Brooke, is optimistic about the development of the Borough education service. "We must congratulate the children who worked so well for their assessments last year and give all our pupils every support for their future learning," she said. "The focus is very much on school improvement and the raising of standards. The welcome increase in school budgets for the coming year will help but it continues to be vital that we press for improved funding in the future. Schools in Poole have had to struggle for too long with inadequate resources."
