25 Feb 99Water Storage Tank Contamination at Grenville Court
Water samples from water storage tanks at Grenville Court have been found to contain traces of chemicals and tests to establish the concentration are currently being analysed.Following liaison with Dorset Health Authority, the Borough of Poole will continue to take precautionary measures. Residents will be asked to complete a short questionnaire and after details have been collected, arrangements will be made for urine samples to be taken from residents and any visitors to Grenville Court since Friday 12 February.
Council Officers have been consulting with residents and the vast majority wish to remain in their homes. Therefore alternative water supplies, bottled water, shower and toilet facilities have been provided outside the building as well as a laundry service. The mains water supply in Poole is unaffected.
Dr Steve Tuckwell, Wessex Water's Head of Supply, Quality and Regulation said: "The public water supply is not the cause of the problems in Grenville Court. As the problem is confined within the building, other Wessex Water customers need not be concerned about the quality of their water supply".
A local control centre at the Old Town Community Centre in Lagland Street has been established to provide first hand help and advice to residents. This will be staffed by Council Officers from 8.00am until 10.00pm until Sunday, and out of hours services will continue as normal.
Further tests will continue on the remaining water tanks in Grenville Court and additional tests will be made in two flats where specific complaints have been made.
Residents will continue to receive regular updates and once the extent of the problem has been established, every effort to restore normal water supply will be made.
