25 Mar 99NATIONAL SPORTING AMBASSADORS VISIT POOLE
Poole is the first town to receive a visit under the Sports Council new "Sporting Ambassadors" scheme. Two members of the England netball team will be visiting various schools in the Borough on Tuesday 23rd March. Joanne Zinzan, captain of the national squad, has won 20 caps to date and is a 1998 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist. Hellen Manufor has over 30 caps for her country.
Their programme will include a number of visits. They will present 6th form students from Poole and Bournemouth schools with certificates marking their success in gaining the Beginners Umpiring Award. This will be followed by informal talks and skills sessions at two Poole and two Bournemouth schools.
Finally they will be attending the evening session of the highly successful Poole Netball Club at Ashdown Leisure Centre.
The scheme is designed to provide opportunities for successful sportsmen and women of all ages to visit schools and other youth organisations to inspire young people about the benefits of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.
Debbie Priest, Youth Sports Development Adviser for Bournemouth and Poole, is delighted that national figures will be taking time out to share their enthusiasm and expertise with local pupils. "We have some very talented netballers in our area. I am certain that this visit will inspire many of them to achieve even higher standards. We welcome anything that raises the profile of physical education as it continues to be a vital element in the school curriculum."
