29 Dec 04Christmas comes early to anti-social residents
The Borough of Poole and Dorset Police handed out some early Xmas presents in the form of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBO’s) to four local residents who have been acting anti-socially and causing problems in their communities.
The week before Christmas, the following ASBO’s were awarded at Bournemouth Magistrates Court.
· On 21 December - a 16 year old Hamworthy youth received a two year ASBO because of anti-social behaviour as part of a group in Poole town centre which included harassment and intimidation of retailers and their customers and users of the bus station. The ASBO awarded now prevents the youth from entering large parts of the town centre and Hamworthy Co-op, associating with the rest of the group and committing acts of vandalism. A 14 year old member of the group is also due in court in January for an ASBO hearing.
· On 22 December an interim ASBO was granted for a 17 year old youth, from Canford Heath who was identified as a ringleader of harassment, abuse, criminal damage and intimidation of residents, shopkeepers and passers by in Adastral Square.
· On 23 December an interim ASBO was granted for Graham Chiverton, aged 54 from Parkstone. The award was made because of extreme abuse and harassment of neighbours as well as frequently appearing drunk and disorderly.
In addition:
· On 23 December, 28 year old Bourne Valley resident Terry Cook received a two year ASBO when he appeared before Dorchester Crown Court for sentencing for breaches of a restraining order and criminal damage. The ASBO now prevents Cook from appearing in the street in a drunken state, driving a motor vehicle, causing criminal damage and using threatening behaviour. Cook was also sentenced to a Community Rehabilitation Order and a Drug Testing & Treatment Order.
Ian Cooke, Anti-Social Behaviour Co-ordinator, Borough of Poole said: "It was unfortunate that so many ASBO cases appeared in court at Christmas, which should be a time for rejoicing and happiness but the behaviour of these four individuals has had a devastating effect on their local communities which must be addressed. I suspect that those who have been subjected to this kind of abuse will rejoice in the extra protection these ASBO’s afford them. Once again the Council and the Police have demonstrated their commitment to tackling the anti-social elements who blight our communities".
